BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
An Artistic Life
Born in Caracas Venezuela to a musical family, Jose's grandmother began teaching him piano at the age of 4 shortly after emigrating to the United States. He eventually became a pupil of the Russian School of Piano Technique and would go on to receive two degrees from the conservatory at the Eastman School of Music. in 2018 he moved to New York to work as a freelance musician and educator.
In his teenage years, Jose began experimenting with songwriting and recording using an old 4 track cassette recorder. Since then he has written, recorded, and produced songs across a variety of styles that have been featured in TV, movies, and streamed millions of times. NPR Music called his work "music of the highest caliber." Inspired by a myriad of cultures, Jose's output dances between afro-latin dance rhythms, classical orchestration, alternative rock, and hip-hop production.
Jose has released two studio albums under his own name - 2020's "Pictures I've Taken" and 2023's "Entre Tierras." Both titles take inspiration from Jose's evocative poetry examining life, death, and romance.
He was a producer and guest vocalist on La Orquesta Triunfadora's self-titled EP "Clasicos Sentimentales." Alongside Latin-Grammy winning producer Cheo Pardo (Los Amigos Invisibles) Jose co-produced the debut Consentidos de la Casa record "Live at Nublu." Jose's film score for ADVISRY's SS23/24 fashion short won the "Best Original Score" award at the New York Independent Short Film Festival. He performs regularly with the Grammy-nominated Afrobeats band Antibalas.
In recent years Jose has begun experimenting with illustration and poetry using only a micron pen and an empty sheet of paper. His style is akin to graphic novels and cartoons from his youth, as they explore the novelty of the human experience in an urban setting. He is working on publishing a compilation of artwork and poetry into a book.
Jose is currently undertaking a long-term project in collaboration with the non-profit organization "Brooklyn Youth Club." He is developing and leading a "sistema" style music education program for students in East New York Brooklyn.
