The VOICES program is a community-based arts project developed in collaboration with the non-profit Brooklyn Youth Club. It is a long-term creative work that seeks to design and implement a tuition-free music education program throughout Brooklyn. Our first cell is located in the New Lots neighborhood of East New York. Our inaugural session, “Summer Camp 2025” taught children about the fundamental components of music, reading rhythm and pitch notation, singing in unison and harmony, and allowed the exploration of various musical instruments. Most notably the drums, keyboard, and guitar. Students were also engaged in daily art activities like painting with watercolor, oil pastel, and designing and realizing a mural using acrylic paint. The season culminated with a “Talent Show” where students performed individually and as ensembles, playing covers of popular songs, debuting original music, choreography, theatrical plays, and drum ensembles.
